lirubis's Full Review: Licor 43 Spirits and Beers

Liqueurs have to be the most challenging category of them all, in terms of defining flavor structures. This gem from Spain is really a superb specimen because not only is a versatile and fun mixer: it tastes delicious alone!

The color is a brilliant burnt yellow, not as pale as Frangelico, diverting towards orange. The consistency almost a syrup, dense yet lively. It behaves like a happy spirit in the snifter, with a great cling and smooth consistency.

The aroma is extremely hard to define, since the recipe is composed of 43 different elements (thus the name Licor 43..duh!!), intensely sweet and reminiscent of almonds, sharp floral and herbal notes. A ticklish sensation invades the nostrils as soon as you approach your face, something I find very amusing and pleasing. I asked my "43" mentor for his favorite way of drinking this fascinating drink, and he just suggested a cold soda water chaser. The idea was good after all, as I explain below.

The first sip has to be one of the most memorable experiences in spirit sampling. What a warm feeling, what a smooth sensation, what a GREAT flavor! The tongue reacts vividly to the powerfully sweet combination of citrus, floral, herbal and spicy elements. Tangy at first, reminded me of those delicious butterscotch candies I still love, but way more ample in terms of basic flavor elements. The texture is so smooth, that you may even forget this is actually an alcoholic beverage: extremely mild attack, and a gentle transition to the throat.

Sometimes is so hard to describe flavors (try describing how a strawberry tastes like...),and in this case its even more complicated: I seriously agree with the phrase they use in their labels, in terms of calling this liqueur as a "category in itself". I find it sweet and mildly tart, predominant in vanilla and floral overtones ( melissa, chamomilla, armentia, damiana, anise, violet), and some fruit elements such as melon, orange, even chestnut.

The finish in retronasal passages is absolutely enchanting: long, elegant, persistent and extremely warm and lively. You dont want to saturate the senses, so be smart and have an ocassional sip from your sparkling water chaser. I wont even touch the "mixer" capabilities because
Im really not going to try it like that. This has to be taken straight.

This is ideal for a good smoke after meals, and blends superbly with robust cofees as a perfect complement. Possibly the best liqueur from spain, 43 deserves a deeper exploration from people who enjoy intense organopeltic experiences. Really worth a shot.

"Drinking honey":

Product Rating:

Pros: Smooth, sweet, great after dinner

Cons: If not drunk in moderation, will be gone quickly

b_hodges's Full Review: Licor 43 Spirits and Beers

My girlfriend visited her family in Merida, Mexico last Christmas and came back to Seattle with a bottle of "Licores Cuarenta y Tres". She poured me a shot and it was like drinking honey! It was thick, smooth, and sweet -- like nothing I'd had before.

Licor43 is a very nice digestive aid after dinner and can be a substitute for dessert. My girlfriend and I polished off the bottle from Merida in about two months by drinking one to two shots just about every night until the bottle was gone. It is recommended to drink this in moderation, particularly if you don't have connections in Mexico.

Earlier I described the taste as honey-like, but after rolling it around my palate multiple times, I discovered that the taste of vanilla predominates. Though it encompasses many different flavors, that seems to be the prevalent final taste. The texture and color resemble honey and that's maybe what I was mistaking it for.

Licor 43 goes well with a number of desserts, but vanilla ice cream is a favorite of mine.

itsjan's Full Review: Licor 43 Spirits and Beers

I am not a drinker..but this is absolutely delicious!!! About 25 years ago we were friends with this couple. One night at their home they offered us an after dinner cocktail. They had quite a variety at their little bar, but I wrinkled my nose at everything. Finally, the wife said to me..I want you to just try this...as she took out this bottle of yellow liquid with a strange name. She proceeded to pour some over ice and handed me the glass. I am so awful..I smelled it first..it smelled like sweet vanilla..I took a tiny sip and I was hooked. This stuff is absolutely delicious!!! Very smooth..sweet...with a vanilla flavor. I can't think of any other word but delicious!!!

Cuarenta Y Tres translates to 43..just in case you wanted to know..and back then it wasn't so easy to find. But, we went from liquor store to liquor store and finally found a bottle. I served it to everyone I knew calling it "The Nectar of the Gods"!!

Today, it is easier to find. If you have never tasted this and like sweet drinks like Annisette or Amaretto, you will love this!! So will your non-drinking friends...like me!! I can't say enough about this stuff...it is the best!!!

"Best liquor on the planet"

Also very versatile

Cons: None that I could think of

The Bottom Line: Extremely versatile and delicious liquor for those that appreciate a smooth and sweet drink. Every well stocked bar should have it handy.

eeniesmom's Full Review: Licor 43 Spirits and Beers

Let me start by saying that I'm not a worldly drinker, but I know what I like and I like this, A LOT! I have a very well stocked tiki bar in my pool cabana and I love to entertain in the summer months. It's like a grown-ups play house with a cool Hawaiian theme, and lots of choice liquors and mixers to make just about anything. I am also known for making a killer sangria and thought I was doing really well until a friend of mine brought some of her sangria to my house for a girls' day out at the pool. I must say, it totally caught me by surprise. The magic ingredient was Licor 43. Aside from the usual fruits and a good red wine, that was really the only difference. However, it made a huge difference.

I had never even heard of it until that fateful day and now I can't imagine having a bar without it. Apparently, no real Spaniard would consider making a sangria without it. I'm convinced they know what they are doing.

I'm quoting from the label "Licor 43 is a hit in bars and in shops and has become a star. The secret of its success? Not least of all, it's the secret aromatic composition of deliciously ripe citrus fruits, spicy Mediterranean herbs and selected vegetable essences and aromatic spices with a sensuous hint of vanilla." I couldn't have said it better myself, so I didn't even try.

It's great on the rocks, neat, and in many wonderful drinks. Makes a to-die-for Dreamsicle, Little beers, even in hot chocolate, Valencia punch and the list just goes on and on. It's very versatile.

If you like sweet and delicious dessert type drinks, you cannot go wrong with Licor 43, unless you don't have enough. I promise it will be the hit of any party. The other name for it is Cuarenta Y Tres. Licor 43 is produced by Diego Zamora S.A. product of Spain. Aye, carumba!

"The best liqueur"

Product Rating:

Pros: Light on the stomach ( and head)

Cons: You might be out all night drinking it!

brookg25's Full Review: Licor 43 Spirits and Beers

I am a bartender in a little beer and shot place. Even though I am a bartender I am not a big drinker. It is customary in my bar for the customers to buy the bartender a shot, and although many times I wished to say no, I did anyway because every shot is money in our register.
I used to do shots of blackhaus. By the end of the night I couldn't even stand up. I was on a quest to find a shot that tasted good and was not potent. About a year went by and we got a bottle of 43. Prior to this we had people coming in asking for it. So one night I tried it. It was amazing. Delicious and easy going down. I could stand at the end of the night, due to it's lowered alcohol content.
Since then I have been recommending it to everyone. Everyone falls in love with it. Unfortunately it is still not widely available at bars, but more and more people are beginning to carry it.
It is great in cappachino or served with triple sec and milk. I would recommend this to anyone.

"Nice and sweet"

vvgo's Full Review: Licor 43 Spirits and Beers

I am not a big fan of sweet drinks, but Licor 43 is certainly an exception. It has a thick texture to it, which mixes well with milk. In fact, for a while I only thought people mixed it with milk.

On its own, Licor 43 is a great after dinner drink. A little bit served at room temperature over some light conversation will help you relax even after a big meal.

However, this is in my opinion the best way to drink it. In a tall class with ice, mix one part Licor 43 with one part cold milk and sprinkle with cinnamon. It's sweet taste will please even the light drinkers out there

"Sensually Exotic Liqueur"

Product Rating:

Pros: Elegant, Exotic, Luscious, Delicious and Sweet as Confection! Allows creativity; it mixes smoothly.

Cons: Not as popular as it should be! Not always easily accessible in the market.

caribbeankiss's Full Review: Licor 43 Spirits and Beers

This liqueur is absolutely luscious! I have a very particular taste of which only several products are appreciated.

While visiting Puerto Rico, I was introduced to the Latin 43 liqueur. It was absolutely luscious! I appreciate the sweet, spiced, almost nutty flavor. It is absolutely fabulous! I found it to be somewhat strong on the rocks, so it was served with cream or milk. The concoction was divine.

It is a must try for the finickiest of drinkers. It is perfect for those who appreciate fine liqueurs such as Amaretto or Frangelico liqueur and other sweet seducers.

Enjoy!

Licor 43 Wins Speargrass, AB.  family top prize at annual minigolf challenge and BBQ !

"So we have our annual mini golf challenge and BBQ in Speargrass yesterday and different families build their own mini golf hole and place it out on their driveways while the residents go around to play.  We did a pirate ship for ours.  Golfers vote for best hole and this is a big competition amongst neighbours for bragging rights.

My husband and our boys came back after a couple of holes and told me it was going to be between us and 2 others and we would need something to pull in the lead.  We already had ring pops for the kids so Murray figured we needed 'pops' for the adults too so he got a couple bottles of alcohol out and we gave shots to the adults.

We gave out Licor 43 and it was a huge hit as everyone wondered where they could buy that as they had never seen it before.  We told them Willowpark Wines in Calgary as its our closest store and I think we sold close to 30 bottles of it  yesterday! When the votes came in at the BBQ we were announced the 'hands down winners' and the ballots came in with quite a few comments of 'because of  Licor 43 ."
